Apparently, you don't have any audio device connected to your PC

After running some driver updates, I've lost all sound on my PC.In Control Panel under Sounds, I get the message:
Apparently, you don't have any audio device connected to your PC.

The troubleshooter doesn't help because it says no audio device is connected.
I tried a System Restore, but it failed.
How can I reinstall the audio devices?
