The screen, called the Desktop, usually contains icons/shortcuts to the actual file or folder or programs. Might right-click the Desktop and click View, try one of the choices there, by default the Show desktop icons is checked.

Had to mow the lawn before it rains and didn't finish. If you'll look in File Explorer, C:\Users\YOURLOGINNAMEHERE\Desktop folder, see if the icons/shortcuts/files are still there.

Is the last box shown by Bighorn ("Show desktop icons" checked) ?
If yes,
Try "Desktopinifix" (the download link is at the bottom of the page, just before "Step 2").
Rightclick the downloade zip file and choose extract ! Then click on the extracted .exe file, choose "Desktop" and click on "Fix destop.ini".

If this des not help, you need to recreate your shortcuts.
For the system icons, go to "Settings" / "Personalization" / "Themes" and scroll down to "Dektop icon Settings". Then tick the boxes, you want.
For your personalized icons you need to click on the respective.exe files in the folders, hold the left mouse button down and draw a shortcut to your desktop. When you drw the icons to the desktop, pat attention that it says "create a shortcut here", not "move". Folders are automatically moved from their location to the desktop !!! (which is bad), so immediately release the left mouse button, if it says "move". Drawing exe files to the desktop automatically creates à shortcut !
