Replacing an external hard drive

I'm going to replace my existing external Hard Drive with another one. What is the easiest or best way to transfer the entire drive to the other drive?

Do you have enough space on you internal to handle it? Or pehaps just too much data??

Are the drives both USB? In which case can they not both be plugged in at the same time?
