I have a couple of Questions relating to up grading /updating to windows 11 22H2 on my laptop (see specs below) which had Win 11 installed when purchased. I am in my mid-seventies and not really computer literate so please be gentle with any answers ?

Vostro 15 3515

Edition Windows 11 Pro Version 21H2

(PERSONAL Acc – not connected to hotmail/Outlook acc)

(Installed when purchased March 2022)

Win 11 Installed on ‎09/‎03/‎2022

OS build 22000.1335

Processor AMD Ryzen 5 3450U

Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx 2.10 GHz

Installed RAM 16.0 GB

System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

TPM 2 enabled.

Fully updated for existing (21H2) OS version

Now down to the questions

I would like to update to Win 11 22h2 which is offered to me but fails part-way through download so I would like to upgrade/update manually. I suspect I know that this could be because I am not connected to an MS on-line mail Acc.

QUESTION 1

If I download the Win 11 ISO will this see existing OS and just do the upgrade/update?

Or will this do a clean install of OS which I DO NOT want?

2nd question

If I connect my laptop to an MS mail Acc to do the upgrade/update would it be easy to revert back to personal/local Acc? And if so how would I do this?

I will be making a full Easus ToDo backup image of my existing OS before proceeding.
I hope I have been clear in my requirements.

Don't worry. If you did a good backup (and I think your's is), you will be fine.

Question 1:

When the download of your iso file is finished, do NOT reboot. As far as I know it is not possible to do a CLEAN install, if you do not reboot. To do a clean install, you need to boot from a CD (where you burned the iso to) or from an USB key (where you put the iso file) and you need to change the boot order in the BIOS.

Instead "mount" the iso file as soon as the download is finished (click with the right mouse button to see the context menu and chose "mount"). Then go into the - mounted - iso file (the "mount" option will show you what's inside the iso) and find the "setup" file. Click on it. ... The install process will start.

If nevertheless you will be asked to do a CLEAN install, refuse it. Chose "Keep my files and folders" (or something similar) instead. (As far as I remember this should be pre-activated by default in any case).

When, during the installation process (don't go away, take a cup of tea before and stay "tuned", it doesn't take long), Windows will ask you to create a Microsoft account, temporarily remove your internet cable physically or temporarily stop/cancel any wifi access. Then insert a phantasy e-mail adress: "abc@xyz" (or -better - use other letters or combine letters and numbers, because everyone is using this). May be you need to do it twice or trice. (Could be that it even works without unplugging the internet cable, I really don't recall).

Then Microsoft will give up and you can continue with a local account. Now you can replug Internet.

Question 2:

Y
es, there is no problem to go back to a local account when you upgraded with a Microsoft account. Go to "Settings" on your computer and then "Accounts" and "E-mail and Accounts" and chose "I prefer to use a local account" (or something similar).

Good luck !

Thanks guys.
New question
When downloading the ISO do I choose English USA
or
English International?

I am based in Scottish Borders
Sorry if these seem like stupid questions but I have a knack of getting and doing things wrong

My guess would be to use English International. You can choose the setting during the install process and change it afterwards by following the instructions in the link below.

The difference between the two is basically very subtle. Although both English versions of Windows 11 include the same features, the main difference is those minor differences between the two languages. For instance, if you're in the US, the correct spelling is “colors” and “personalization,” while in the UK, the correct spelling is “coloUrs” and “personaliSation.”

Hi guys
Following the instruction given here I started to the upgrade/update to 22H2 and checked windows update (in setting) and it shows the following update:
Cumlitive Update KB5022836.
Using Windows Update Mini-tool this shows the the update is 121.98GB in size. YES 121.98GB
This is only used to stop preview updates from installing.

What is this update?
It seems to be exceptionally large and would take up the majority of my disk space which is.
Is it essential to enable me to update to 22H2?

During the update/upgrade proccess the proccess seems to just hang there at 46% even though it is still working.

Can I just ignore it? Or must I install it?
It would take up most of my disk space which is 169GB free space plus forever to download.

Thanks for all your help and guidance

The MS Update Catalog shows the size as 319.6MBs. You can visit the link below and download the stand alone installer from there. Be sure to use the correct download for your system.

MS states that "This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system. "

Hi,
I just began (and the stopped) to download the French ISO from the official Microsoft site, just to see the size. It says 5.2 GO = GB (see screenshot).
I think it is so large (5.2 GB),because I chose the multi-edition version.
I also have no clue why your's is 121 GB.

Just keeping you upto date.

Followed all instructions (I printed them out) and watched video.

I went through all the steps carefully and the result was that I still ended up with 21H2.
At no point during the (failed) update was I asked to use an e-mail address.

I am now downloading the latest version of windows 11 (22H2 againto ensure that my last download was not corrupted in someway.

Ok. There should not be a problem

Q.Find the downloaded file. which you should be downloading thriugh the media creation tool

The file will be downloaed to your download folder.
2: Find the download file, right click it and "Mount"
3. Look for the "setup" and run it.

Go along with the q and a and select a fresh install, keeping your private- personæa files.

It should then install without a problem, up to the end here it begins to ask you your customising requirements.

hI GUYS
SUCCESS! :)

To achieve this I did the following:
1. Downloaded new 22H2 iso
2. Checked MS Updates to ensure I was fully upto date
3. Burned new iso to USB pendrive using RUFUS 3.2.1
4 Disabled ALL security Programs/Apps
5 Disconnected router (switched off power)
6. Ran the Install icon on the USB drive.
7. Waited (impatiently) for it to complete process.
8. Restarted all security programs/apps
9. Restarted router.
9. I then ran Win Update again to bring me fully upto date.

But I must mention that at no point was I asked to enter e-mail details.
There could possibly be a setting to over-ride this in Rufus that I did not see.
Still on local account as I wanted.

So guys once again I give you my thanks for your help and patience with me (y)

Hi Ernie,
I am happpy together with you that you succeeded !
But because you said you are an elder person, I am adding a philiosophical note.
I only sent you the :wow: icon (and not the :like: icon).
It is because today, - un fortunately - you can never know, if someone (including me) is serious or lobbying (for Rufus for instance).
The whole thing is a question of trust.
Can you ever trust "over the internet" ?
