Windows 11 folder thumbnails empty

In Windows Explorer, every folder icon just shows a normal orange folder shape. Previously, it would show thumbnails or at least some generic files on the folder icon so that I knew the folder contained files.

Is this a bug, or does Windows 11 not show what a folder contains anymore? It seems like a retrograde step if this is the case.
